Five years ago, I began taking art classes with Holt School of Fine Art, once a week after school. Deciding to take these classes completely changed the way I view art. Through the instructors at Holt, I have learned how to use charcoal, pastel, watercolor, and oil paints. These classes have also introduced me to other working artists in our building. The school has also provided me with opportunities to engage in my community through public art. I have volunteered as a painter on two murals for Levine’s Children Hospital in Charlotte, NC, and I have had my art featured uptown in the District Attorney’s Office, as well as, being published in Celebrating Art. Holt School of Fine Art has helped me to become confident as an artist and has also introduced me into the many ways I can use my art to enhance the community.
I am a successful student athlete participating on my high school’s highly competitive swim team. I am also a member of Beta Club and National Art Honor Society. My favorite community service project that I participate in is the Exceptional Equestrians Program. This program serves area children and adults with special needs through therapeutic horseback riding. At the end of each 6 week session participants are presented with a portrait of themselves riding on their horses. The presentation of the portraits is truly a rewarding aspect of the program. I enjoy all of these activities and feel like they have made me a well rounded individual. My creative practice is technically driven and includes pieces that show a wide range of my abilities. Oil Paint is a medium in which I excel. Many of my oil paintings are very traditional and show my exploration of paint application. I have recently been exploring more conceptual and thought provoking concepts, as well as, a variety of new mediums. I have branched out to use acrylic, pastels, and also modeling paste. Some of my most recent pieces are focused on the environment and my personal political views. In the future I hope to explore more complex issues plaguing society. |
